Mike Sweeney has joined the YMCA staff as a Trainer for the new YMCA Sports Strength Academy. 

Mike is a multiple world record powerlifting holder, multiple world-national-state powerlifting champion, international powerlifting referee/organizer, Russian Master of the Sport (the only non-Russian to achieve this honor) and marathon runner.  Mike will be working as a personal trainer for those interested in gaining strength to play a sport better, run a marathon, or to lose weight.  Each workout will be personalized and he is willing to work with youth through adults, men or women.  We are very excited to welcome Mike to our staff. Fit Kids (7 - 10 yrs)
For children ages 7-10 who want to start a healthier lifestyle. Includes active games such as basketball, soccer, kickball, and circuits. Nutritional information will also be included. Get moving and have fun!

Kid Strength Training (11 - 14 yrs)
For kids 11 through 14 who need to loose weight or get in condition for a sport. New studies show weight training will help unconditioned kids get fit by increasing muscle which in turn will increase metabolism. Increased metabolism will help them lose weight and is initially easier to perform than aerobic activities.
Nutritional information will also be included.


Teen Strength Training (13 - 16 yrs)
For 13-16 yr olds who want help with a weight training program to get in condition for a sport, lose weight or just get more fit. They will learn the proper techniques and programs to make weight training safe and effective and have fun with other teens.

PreGym for Toddlers and Two's (ages 12 mos. & walking to 35 mos.)
Toddler's and 2 year olds....grab a favorite grown-up and join us for music, games and activities that will help develop physical and social skills. Taught by Vickie Books, NIU KNPE Instructor.

PreGym for 3- 5 Year OldsGym Class for preschoolers! Children will develop key motor skills throguh music, games, obstacle courses, and fun! Must be toilet-training. Taught by Vickie Books, NIU KNPE Instructor.

Lil Dragons (4 - 7 yrs.)
This class introduces young children to the martial arts with a focus on ‘karate manners’, courtesy and respect, flexibility, balance and directing energy in positive ways. Students can progress from white belt to black belt starting with this class. Class uniforms and safety equipment are available for purchase from the instructor. The lead instructor is Tom Scott, a Black Belt in Isshin-Ryu Karate and a local police officer.

Youth Martial Arts (8 - 12 yrs)
Techniques of Isshin-ryu Karate and Lung Chi Chuan Fa Kung-fu will be used to help students develop physically, mentally, and spiritually. Students will learn to be peaceful warriors and to solve their problems with logic and reason. Classes will be taught by Herman Kussro, Tom Eller, Barb Kaufmann, and black belt staff.

Adult/Teen Martial Arts (13 - adult)
Techiniques of Isshin-ryu Karate, Lung Chi Chuan Fa Kung-fu, and Okinawan Kobudo will be used to help students develop physically, mentally, and spiritually. Students are able to progress from a beginner to a master under the direction of Hanshi-go Herman Kussro and black belt staff.

BETH FOWLER SCHOOL OF DANCE EXTENSION CLASSES

Creative Dance (3 - 5 yrs)
An imaginative class that leads children through fun, creative movements that encourage stage expression and use of pre-ballet fundamentals.

Creative Dance (5 -7 yrs)
Same as above for children 5 to 7.
Dress code: dance attire and dance shoes.

Ballet/Jazz (8 - 12 yrs.)
An introductory class that teaches basic ballet positions, steps and short combinations. A brief break is followed by beginning jazz techniques, steps and routines.

Dress Code for all creative dance classes: dance attire and dance shoes

Kidnics/tumbling (4 - 6 yrs)
A pre-gymnastics program that will introduce children to the principle exercises and skills in gymnastics and tumbling in a fun-based environment.

Kids Gymnastics(7 - 9 yrs)
A pre-gymnastics and tumbling program that includes beginning tumbling skills, acrobatic stunts and creative movement.

Tumbling/Artistic Athletics (10 & up)
This program combines the introduction of advanced skills, such as walkovers and hand springs, and combination routines incorporating basic dance steps.
